Slagheap are a do-it-for-yourself post-punk band from Bristol: unaffected, spontaneous and born out of a desire to get loose. Bound by friendship, family and a shared disdain for the softboy sausagefest scenes they encountered all too often at gigs, at the very end of 2017 they thought they would just have a go at making some noise together. Favouring vociferousness over virtuosity, all the instruments they chose were either completely new to them or had not been touched for many moons. A drunken conversation at a Bas Jan gig led to their first live show in March of 2018, supporting Rattle and Myles Manley in an old school hall, and they have been hungrily devouring the DIY scene since then. Between 2018-2021 Slagheap have been thrilled to support Big Joanie, Beak>, PigsX7, Fontaines D.C., The Beths, The Pop Group and many more.
Following a successful 2018 DIY cassette release of phone recordings, 2019 saw the band head to Invada Studios to record their eponymous debut LP ‘Slagheap.’ Released via Spurge recordings, the album vibrates with effervescent, danceable tunes that riff on female agency/relationships, and jangle the nerves with discordant guitars and chaotically layered, absurd lyrics. The record’s release was celebrated with a sellout gig at Rough Trade Bristol followed by a tour supporting Massicot across the UK in early 2020, as well as headline shows at grassroots venues across the UK.
The DIY scene and ethos is central to the band with all original artwork and videos made by the members. Catherine Johnston (Bass) designed the cover art for the Slagheap LP and their 2020 single Peckish, as well as contributing the lion’s share of the animations for Caffeine video. Sadie Wiggin (Lead guitar, korg & vox) is chief of typography whilst Lydia Johnston (Lead vox & guitar) provides amazing animations and artwork also seen in the Caffeine video and on their social media (@slagheapband). Heidi Wort (drums) does the band’s video editing and some photography as well as additional animation for Caffeine.
Now in the throes of writing their second record which they are hoping to release around the end of 2021/early 2022. The second single from the upcoming release, Caffeine gained radio play in the UK & US on Steve Lamacq on 6 Music, Jack Saunders on Radio 1, James Endeacott on Soho Radio, Sachin Turakhia on Boogaloo Radio, KEXP & was B listed on Amazing Radio. They have been supported by BBC Intro in the West and were invited to do a session at Maida Vale in Dec 2019. Slagheap cannot wait to get out on tour again as well as playing their first festival bookings postponed from 2020.
